Sound Effects

Radio was often referred to as the "Theater of the Mind." Because it was an aural rather than a visual medium, the director of a radio program used sound to paint a picture that a listener could fill in, using his own imagination. To that end, one or more sound effects men were employed to add realism to the picture painted by the Director. They did this in a couple of different ways. Typically, the sound effects man would have an array of mechanical devices at his disposal to reproduce the sounds of horses, guns, doors, and an endless variety of other everyday sounds. Let's take a look at some actual examples from the Golden Age (circa 1940):

This prop door probably stood about 3 feet high and came complete with an attached screen door. Wooden pegs suspended in a frame make a convincing imitation of marching troops when dropped on a table repeatedly. A body falling from a tall building could be simulated by dropping a squash from a height.

Cellophane was often used to simulate the crackling sound of a fire. Here, a bucket and a pair of rubber ear syringes are giving a good facsimile of the sound of a cow being milked. Murder! The sound of a stabbing.

In some cases it was inconvenient (or impossible) to produce the necessary sounds mechanically. That's where records came in. Any self-respecting radio studio that produced on-the-air plays kept a library of sound effects records, usually in 10-inch 78-rpm format. In many cases, the studio had two or more turntables mounted in a single console exclusively for sound effects work. The picture at the top of this page shows a console with three turntables.

Several companies produced sound effect libraries for radio use. Gennett, Major Records, Silver Masque, Speedy Q, and Victor produced recordings of everything from barnyards to bombers for use in the studio. I currently have the complete 1947 catalog from Major Records, plus a few records from earlier and later issues. Columbia also produced a sound effects library. They appear to have been recorded in England but I believe they were sold on both sides of the Atlantic.

As part of this radio project, I have long wanted to build a library of these sound effect records. A while back, I spotted a box of them on the internet for a very reasonable price. I bought them and anxiously awaited their arrival. When they showed up, I spent most of a day cataloging them. It was a pile of records and most of them were in excellent condition. Most looked like they had never left their sleeves. They are among the records listed below. Eventually, I plan to record these discs and turn each cut into a discrete wav or mp3 file. While I would love to use them as originally designed, that sort of usage would be rough on them and I would like to preserve them as much as possible.
